- Woodchips can be an extremely effective playground surfacing material, or impact-attenuation surface. When used as a Playground surfacing (soft fall, cushion fall or playground chips as it is sometimes known), woodchips can be very effective in lessening the impact of falls from playground equipment. When spread to depths of one foot (30 centimeters) playground woodchip can be effective at reducing impacts in falls up to 11 feet (3 meters). Playground woodchips is also an environmentally friendly alternative to rubber type playground surfaces.

Playground woodchips
The photo doesn't do these wood chips justice. They're fantastic quality chips of a uniform size, which is about 1 to 1.5 inches square and quite thin rather than thick and blocky. They meld together very well and readily create a homogenous pathway or playground surface. Highly recommend them over the bags of wood chips (which contain chips of all different sizes and widths) available at big box hardware stores -- and a much better value, as well. I bought the full square yard and find it's more than enough for several long pathways and a flat playground area in a large back yard.

Exactly what I was expecting!
I used the wood chips on the pathways in my garden. They were easy to work with and look great. Great way to keep the weeds down.
